This debate is not new... but right now, it feels louder than ever. Not just in South Africa, but across the world. The tension is growing, the conversations are getting heated, and the question keeps coming back…  Are OG’s really gatekeeping the new generation?

For now, let’s focus on SA Hip Hop because that’s where things are getting real.

Firstly, if you don’t follow Hip Hop, this might not make sense at first. So let’s break it down. Gatekeeping is “the activity of controlling access to something.” Simple definitio;  but in reality, it runs deep.

In the music space, gatekeeping is not just about access,  it’s about power. It’s about who gets seen, who gets heard, and who gets left behind. It’s when influential people quietly close doors. When they tell promoters, “don’t book this artist.” When they say, “don’t work with that one.” When they push narratives that slowly kill your chances before you even get in the room. And the scary part? Most of the time, it happens behind the scenes.

This is not just a South African problem. Even internationally, artists have spoken about how hard it is to break through without the right co-sign. Yes, the internet has made things easier and anyone can go viral. But viral doesn’t always mean sustainable. Without real support, real backing, and real opportunities… you can still be locked out.

In SA Hip Hop, co-signs used to mean something. They used to change lives. Remember when AKA Co-signed Emtee ? Remember when Riky and AKA co-signed Costa Titch? What a time to be alive. Riky Rick understood that. He didn’t just talk,  he acted. And when he gave a co-sign, it meant something. He created the Cotton Fest movement which doesn't need any explanation.

Lets look at the Frank Casino co-sign. Before the mainstream, Frank Casino was already popular in the streets most especially in East Rand, he was grinding. Building his name from the ground up and he even had a song with A$AP Ferg !  But because there was no PR behind it, it flew under the radar. (The song is very hot though you should check it out link) --->  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ljpsakpWZQ&list=RD0ljpsakpWZQ&start_radio=1

Then came “Whole Thing.  Frank Casino made a SoundCloud hit a moment waiting to happen and then Riky stepped in. He jumped on the remix and everything changed. That was not just a feature… that was a co-sign. He helped secure a Kappa deal, pushed the visuals, and most importantly he brought Frank into his world. They later did a joint ep which did so well in the streets.

I remember being at Kong (Now know as Louis in Rosebank). Riky was on the lineup, the energy was already crazy. Then he pulls up with Frank… and they perform “Whole Thing” together. That moment? You could feel it. That’s what a co-sign looks like. Real, Visible, Impactful!

But now? That energy feels different.

Fast forward to today, and it feels like the art of the co-sign is fading. The gap between the OG’s and the new generation is wider than ever. Two different mindsets. Two different worlds.

So… are OG’s gatekeeping the new gen in SA Hip Hop?  Yes. But not all of them.

Khuli Chana is one of the few who showed what it means to put someone on. He gave Maglera a real co-sign deals, shows, exposure. He also stood next to A-Reece and performed with him for free. That’s not talk, that’s action!

But let’s be honest… not everyone is moving like that.

Some OG’s are bitter. They came into a game that didn’t have the same opportunities, the same money, the same global reach. So when they see the new generation winning faster, moving smarter, getting more, it hits a nerve. And instead of opening doors, some choose to close them.

At the same time, there’s another side to this.

Some OG’s simply don’t connect with the new sound. The game has evolved. It’s not just about bars anymore,  it’s about vibe, branding, presence, understanding the internet. And that disconnect makes it harder for them to co-sign something they don’t fully understand.

But the truth is… it’s not one-sided.

The new generation also plays a role. There’s a lack of respect sometimes. A mindset of “we don’t need the OG’s.” And that creates even more distance. More tension. More division. So now you have a culture split in two and that’s dangerous. Because Hip Hop has always been about community about passing the torch. About building something bigger than yourself.

Right now, SA Hip Hop is at a crossroads. One side is holding onto power and the other is trying to break through. But if the bridge between them keeps burning, the culture will suffer. Gatekeeping might protect positions, but it kills growth. And if the culture stops growing, everyone loses. The real question is not whether gatekeeping exists… it’s who is brave enough to break the cycle and put the culture first.
